Melvin R. Hamlett currently serves as vice president for Business and Finance of Lane College, presiding over the Area of Business and Finance and managing in excess of $70 million of the Collegeís assets. He has served in this post since 1992. However, he joined the Lane College team in 1968 as an assistant accountant.
As chief financial officer, Mr. Hamlett presents financial reports and business and plans to the board of trustees, and participates in financial meetings with external constituents. He is also responsible for working closely with other vice presidents to monitor, analyze and assess the operating budget and perform long-term and short-term fiscal forecasting. Mr. Hamlett is also recognized by his peers and serves as an on-site and off-site evaluator with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
In his 40+ years of tenure at Lane, Mr. Hamlett has been instrumental in the development and construction of several buildings on campus. Highlights of these projects include the Chambers-McClure Academic Center, Phillips Dining Hall, Harper Residential Facility, Edens Residential Facility, Jennie E Lane Residential Facility, Millennium Science Building, Orchards Residential Facility, Alumni Residential Facility, and Eastbrooke Residential Facility.
Professional affiliations include the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers. He also serves on the Civil Service Commission for the city of Jackson.
Mr. Hamlett holds a bachelorís degree in business education from Lane College and an MBA degree from Memphis State University.
