|How to search for a print book in the library|
|1. From any computer go to www.lanecollege.edu and click "Library" below the main picture.|
2. Click “Library Online Catalog” on the left menu then click the "Search" tab.
3. Use the drop down menu to choose to search by:
4. Click the “search” button to bring up the list of results related to your search term. In the results list the title of the book is displayed along with the author, call number, and number of books available. An entry in the list will look like this:
- Keyword (e.g., climate)
- Title (e.g., Global Fever)
- Author (Last name first e.g., Calvin, William)
- Subject (e.g., climate change)
|5. If you find a book you would like to locate take note of the entire call number (in the above example it would be 363.7387 C168g). The call number is a decimal number between 000 and 999.999 used to find the specific location of the book in the library.|
- In some instances a call number will have a letter that precedes or follows the decimal number. This signifies a book is in a unique collection in a different area within the library. Here are the special collections:

|To access Lane College Library’s NetLibrary e-books|
|To access Lane College Library’s NetLibrary e-books click on “Library E-Book” on the Lane College Library website.From this page browse the entire collection of e-books in the results list or use the “Basic Search” function in the box on the right to search by title, author, subject, keyword, or within the full-text of the e-books. To access an e-book click the picture of the book or “View this e-book” to open the e-book reader.On the right of this page will be the e-book that can be flipped through using the “Next” and “Previous’ buttons in the upper-right corner. On the left, access specific sections of the e-book by clicking on the section name. To search within the text of the book use “Search this eContent” on the bottom-left corner.To print pages from an e-book click the “print” button at the top of the e-book reader. The currently viewed page or a range of pages can be printed. The number of pages that can be printed is limited to 15 pages from a single title per hour.In order to access the Lane College Library’s e-book collection off-campus as well as save a list of favorite e-books, a Net Library Account must be created. To begin this process click “Create an account” at the top of the net library homepage or search page. Create a username and password and fill out basic information on the form then click “Create account” to finish the process.After creating an account and logging in using your username and password, e-books can be added to a “favorite” folder for easy access. Click “Add to Favorites” next to a title to add it to the favorite folder and click “Favorites and Notes” to access your favorites.For more information about Net Library’s functions click on “Help” at the top of the page.|

|How to access EbscoHost|
|To access EbscoHost click “Library E-Database” on the Lane College Library website then “EbscoHost”. On the next page click “EBSCOhost Web”.On this page you can select which specific database you would like to search (e.g., Primary Search, Academic Search Elite). If you are unsure which database to search check “Select all”. Then click “Continue”.You can now begin your search using the search field. On the bottom of this page are search options such as changing search mode, limiting the search by published date, images, publication type, and more. To ensure the search results contain articles whose full-text is available check the “Full Text” box under “Search Options”After clicking search, the results page is displayed listing articles related to your search term. On the left results can be narrowed by source type, subject term, database, and more. On the right results can be limited by full-text, peer reviewed, and publication date. To access an article click on its title.After accessing an article, the citation of the article along with full-text (if available) will be displayed. At the top of the article is a toolbar with icons that allows a user to print, e-mail, save, cite, export the citation, and add an article to the temporary folder. It looks like this: |
To print an article click on the printer icon in the toolbar while accessing an article. On the right, choose what to include in the printing (e.g., citation format, full text) then click “print”To e-mail an article click on the mail icon in the toolbar while accessing an article. Fill in the recipients e-mail address along with an optional message then click “send”.Articles can be saved during a single session by clicking “Add to folder” on the results page or the “Add to folder” icon on an articles page. To access saved articles click on “Folder” at the top of the page at any time. From the folder multiple articles can be simultaneously printed, saved, or e-mailed.For more detailed information about Ebscohost’s functions click “Help” at the top right of the page at any time.

|How to access InfoTrac - Gale Powersearch|
To access Gale Powersearch click “Library E-Database” on the Lane College Library’s website then “Infotrac”.From the displayed list on this page, select one or more specific Gale databases to search (e.g., General Onefile, Computer Database, Southern Life) then begin a search by using the search field.This will display the “PowerSearch” results page listing articles related to your search. The tabs at the top of the list limit the results by publication type (magazines, academic journals, books, news, and multimedia) and the box on the left limits your results to articles with full text and/or pictures. To access an article click on its title.After accessing an article, the citation of the article along with full-text (if available) will be displayed. On the right is a tool box with several useful functions including printing, downloading, e-mailing, dictionary, translation, and more. It looks like this:
To e-mail and article click “Email” in the tool box. Fill in the recipient’s e-mail address along with the available e-mail options (e.g., HTML or plain text, MLA or APA citations) then click “send”.You can mark multiple articles for later access by checking the box next to an articles title on the results page. To access marked articles click the “Marked Items” tab in the upper right.At any time you can access the Powersearch help files by hovering the mouse over “Toolbox” at the top of the page then clicking “Help” on the drop-down menu.

|How to access Newsbank|
To access Newsbank click on “Library E-Database” on the Lane College Library website then “Newsbank”.Click on a collection you would like to search (e.g., Tennessee Newspaper Collection or America’s News Magazines) from the displayed list.After accessing a collection use the search function at the top of the page to search within the entire collection by headline, all text, lead, author, section, caption, page, source, word count, or date . Also, multiple search bars allow using the functions “and”, “or”, and “not” to narrow a search. Here is an example:
After clicking “search” a list of articles meeting the search criteria will be displayed. The left menu allows limiting results (depending on the collection) by year, location, source, and source type. To access an article click on its title.If you would like to print an article click “Print” in the right menu box. This will convert articles into a printer-friendly version that removes unnecessary website graphics. Then click “Print articles” at the top of the page.To e-mail an article click “Email” in the right menu box. Set the recipient and the sender’s email address then click “Send Email”.Articles can be saved during a single session by clicking the checkbox next to an article’s title in the results list. To access saved items click “Saved articles” in the upper right corner. Multiple articles can be printed and e-mailed from this page.At any time you can access Newsbank’s help function by clicking on the “Show Help” box in the upper right.

|How to access World News Digest - Facts on File|
To access the Facts on File databases click “Library E-Database” on the Lane College Library website then “Facts on File: World News Digest”.On this page select a specific collection to access from the displayed list (e.g., World News Digest, Issues and Controversies, Today’s Science).After selecting a specific database use the box on the left to search within the database. Also on the left certain search options can be set including sorting options and date range. Alternatively, the database can be browsed using the categories on the left or various sections on the page.After searching, the results list will be displayed with links to articles related to your search. Using the tabs at the top of the list, results can be refined by source type. To access and article click on its title.When accessing an article, the full-text will be displayed as well as a citation. The toolbar in the upper-right allows for temporarily saving an article, printing, going back to the homepage, and help files. It looks like this:
To print an article first click the print icon in the toolbar to access a printer-friendly version of an article then use the browser’s print command.To e-mail an article click the mail icon in the toolbar. Fill in the recipient’s e-mail address and an optional message then click “send”.Articles can be saved during a single session by clicking on the folder icon in the toolbar. To access all saved articles click “Saved Items” in the upper right corner.For more information about Facts on File’s functions click on the question mark on the upper-right to access help files.
