Public Radio at Lane College The rustic ambience of the Cybercafé and the smooth jazz grooves wafting from the ceiling proved to be the perfect setting for the first of future visits to Lane College by the Memphis-based Public Radio Station WKNO-FM as it conducted its annual fall pledge drive. Several Jackson residents arrived on campus and were interviewed about their ties to public radio. Among those persons interviewed was President McClure, who spoke of the College’s avid support of public radio and the close partnership that exists between Lane College and WKNO. During an extensive interview that was conducted by WKNO personality Kacky Walton, the President proudly spoke of the College’s academic standards, increased enrollment, campus expanse, building program, and other items of interest to Ms. Walton and the 100,000-persons public radio audience that was listening across the mid-south. At the end of the day, the effusive WKNO employees expressed their immense gratitude to the College for its hospitality and for the fine atmosphere that the Cybercafé provided. With exuberance, they stated that they can hardly wait to return next year.
McWherter Scholars Selected The College has received official notification from the Honorable Senator Roy Herron (D-Dresden) that two Lane College students have been selected as Ned McWherter Scholars for the 2008-’09 academic year.
Carolyn Jamese Johnson and Elon C. Brice, a sophomore and junior, respectively, were selected from among several applicants for this coveted award.
Johnson, the reigning Miss Lane College, is the daughter of Teresa Johnson and James Johnson, and is a native of Jackson. The JCM graduate is a biology major with a 3.8 grade point average. Brice is the son of Doretha Brice and Arthur Lee Brice. He is, likewise, a native Jacksonian and Liberty High School graduate majoring in Business Administration with a 3.4 grade point average. Each student will receive a $5,000 stipend along with the opportunity to work with Senator Herron during the course of this school year both in Dresden and at the State Capitol in Nashville. They will also receive academic credit for their work while in the program.
The Ned McWherter Scholars Program, established in honor of the former governor from Dresden, is intended to encourage academically superior Tennessee high school graduates to attend college in Tennessee. The monetary award is funded by the State of Tennessee on a yearly basis. Awards are made in equal installments each semester throughout the academic year.
Lane to Celebrate Homecoming 2008 Homecoming Week at Lane College marks an annual tradition of alumni being welcomed home, and faculty and staff visiting with former students. The Homecoming Committee, chaired by Ms. Darlette Carver Samuels, Executive Assistant to the President, is confident that this year’s Homecoming Celebration will be bigger and better than ever. Lane’s Homecoming celebration is traditionally the largest event that annually occurs in the City of Jackson, pouring more than $3 million dollars into the local economy and boosting Jackson’s population by an estimated 10,000 persons during the 3-day weekend. The Homecoming Committee is taking advantage of this opportunity to maximize the week-long event beginning on Monday, October 20 and ending on Sunday, October 26, 2008, and giving more young alumni and friends of the College a chance to be a part of the celebration. This year’s theme is Freedom In The Ballot – Faith In The Future which seeks to emphasize the historic nature and importance of the impending Presidential election.
