How To Locate A Book

GUIDELINES ON HOW TO LOCATE A BOOK

First, in order to locate a book you need its call number. A book’s call number can be found by searching the library’s online catalog.(See our guide on how to search the catalog for more in-depth information). The Lane College Library uses the Dewey Decimal System which means the books will be in numerical order according to call number. Call numbers can range from 001 to 999.999 (see our guide on call numbers for more in-depth information). The library keeps books in different areas depending on the type of book. A prefix or suffix attached to a call number will indicate what collection the book is in. For example a reference book, such as a dictionary or encyclopedia, will have a prefix of “R” (e.g. “R 031 W927”). Note also that each collection has its own full range of call numbers from 001 to 999.999.
