Lane College mourns the passing of Roosevelt “Ted” Austin Jr., a respected community leader, devoted family man, and steadfast advocate for the College. His vision helped transform one of Jackson’s most visible landmarks into an enduring symbol of pride and purpose.

Ted Austin served as Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer of the Jackson Energy Authority. His leadership reflected integrity and service. His quiet advocacy on behalf of Lane College left one of the most lasting marks on the institution. Through his influence, the Jackson Energy Authority invested in the water tower that now bears the Lane College shield.

The tower was not present when Bishop Isaac Lane founded the College in 1882, yet it has become an unmistakable part of Lane’s identity. Because of Ted Austin’s belief in Lane’s place in the life of the city, the tower stands today as both a work of art and an emblem of heritage, faith, and hope.

“The water tower tells a story,” said Interim President Donald W. Comer, who is also Austin’s brother-in-law. “It tells of the faith that built this College, the community that sustains it, and it tells of one man’s vision. He saw beyond what was and imagined what could be.”

From that vision grew a landmark that now frames the skyline of Lane’s campus. As the College expands its Media Arts and Digital Storytelling programs, the tower continues to appear in photographs, videos, and stories that capture the spirit of Lane College. Each appearance serving as a reminder of how one act of advocacy can shape generations to come.

Traditions at Lane College often begin with people of purpose. The water tower was not part of the College’s beginning, yet it has become an integral part of its soul. Each time its image appears, students, alumni, and members of the Jackson community will remember Roosevelt “Ted” Austin. His faith and commitment helped Lane stand taller.

He lived the Lane College motto, Esse Non Videri — To be, not to seem, and will be remembered for generations.
