Lane College Student Leadership Awards

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership will be hosting the first Lane College Student Leadership Awards on Friday, April 14, 2023. The Student Leadership Awards are presented to outstanding student leaders, student organizations, faculty and staff who have demonstrated exemplary leadership across the campus. These awards focus on but are not limited to co-curricular engagement and service. Applications and nominations for the Leadership Awards are now open. Faculty and Staff please feel free to nominate your outstanding students. All organization awards must be submitted by members of the organization and/or advisors of the organization. All applications and nominations must be submitted by Sunday, March 19, 2023, by 11:59pm.


Organization Awards

Outstanding Event/Program of the Year: This award recognizes student organization that have hosted an innovative and empowering student event/program/activity/project. The program will have fostered community building and will have made a positive impact on the organization, the participants, and the community. Projects or programs that took place between August 2022 and completed by March 2023, are eligible for consideration.

Qualifications:

1. The student organization must be a registered student organization at Lane College.
2. The student organization must be in good standing with Lane College.

Outstanding Service Project of the Year: This award is presented to the student organization which recognizes a responsibility to give their time and energy to improve their community. Any project that provides support to the Jackson community will be considered. The project should be a one-day or ongoing community service project not simply a fundraiser. Projects taking place between August 2022 and March 2023 are eligible for consideration.

Qualifications:

1. The student organization must be a registered student organization at Lane College.
2. The student organization must be in good standing with Lane College.

Organization of the Year: This award is presented to the student organization (non-Panhellenic) which, through activities and projects, has had the most significant positive influence on the College and the surrounding community. This award is based on the quality of campus events held, servant leadership endeavors, involvement with campus events, and/or initiative to further advance the education of Lane College students beyond the classroom. Nominee must be a recognized student organization in good standing.

Individual Awards

Unsung Hero Award: This award recognizes a student who works behind-the-scenes of a successful recognized student organization, athletic team, group, or residential community. This award is given to a student who consistently gives their all, going above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis without expectation of recognition.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Works outside the scope of any formal position they may hold.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the organization, team, group, or residential community.
  • Positively influences the community and campus from behind the scenes.
  • Has a strong attendance record at organization meetings and events.
  • Completes tasks and duties in a timely manner with a high level of quality.

Student Leader of the Year: This award recognizes a student who has demonstrated excellence in academic growth and achievement, as well as excellence in campus and community engagement and has made a contribution to the Lane community through their leadership and participation in campus programs, organizations, and activities.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Holds a leadership position on campus in a recognized student organization, athletic team, residence hall or through student employment.
  • Has made a significant contribution to the Lane campus community upholding and advancing our core values and the College’s mission.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prepare, motivate and impact other students.
  • Maintains a positive image and presence within the Lane community.
  • Has a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Advisor of the Year: This award recognizes a faculty or staff member who advises a student organization or project. This person embodies the ideals of working with a dedicated group of students. They work to support student efforts while advancing the mission of the institution.

Please note: This is NOT for academic advisors.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Serves as an advisor to a recognized student organization or special project and has done so for a minimum of one full semester.
  • Displays commitment to furthering the goals of the organization or project through excellent guidance and advice.
  • Plays an active role in the organization or project through participation in meetings, events, and organization efforts.
  • Allows students to take responsibility for their own learning and understanding of the organization, while providing advice, encouragement, and support to all students.
  • Relates well to individual students.
  • Is available for others and is approachable and open to new ideas.
  • Values initiative and student input.
  • Utilizes different and creative approaches to educating and assisting members.
  • Serves as a positive role model.

National Pan-Hellenic Awards

Fraternity of the Year: This award is presented to a fraternity (NPHC) which, through activities and projects, has had the most significant positive influence on the College and the surrounding community. This award is based on the quality of campus events held, servant leadership endeavors, involvement with campus events, and/or initiative to further advance the education of Lane College students beyond the classroom. Nominee must be a recognized student organization in good standing.

Sorority of the Year: This award is presented to a sorority (NPHC) which, through activities and projects, has had the most significant positive influence on the College and the surrounding community. This award is based on the quality of campus events held, servant leadership endeavors, involvement with campus events, and/or initiative to further advance the education of Lane College students beyond the classroom. Nominee must be a recognized student organization in good standing.

Greek Woman of the Year: The Greek Woman of the Year award recognizes an initiated member who has made a significant impact on her chapter, as well as the entire Greek (NPHC) community. This award commends a student not only for fraternal involvement but also for dedication to Lane College and the local community. Applicants for this award should have a strong academic record and commitment to living their fraternal values.

To be eligible for this award, the following criteria should be met:

  • Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Strong record of leadership in the fraternity/sorority community
  • Strong record of leadership on-campus and in the local community

Greek Man of the Year: The Greek Man of the Year award recognizes an initiated member who has made a significant impact on his chapter, as well as the entire Greek (NPHC) community. This award commends a student not only for fraternal involvement but also for dedication to Lane College and the local community. Applicants for this award should have a strong academic record and commitment to living their fraternal values.

To be eligible for this award, the following criteria should be met:

  • Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Strong record of leadership in the fraternity/sorority community
  • Strong record of leadership on-campus and in the local community
