Jackson, TN (August 15, 2025) – Lane College officially launches its 143rd academic year with the 2025 Fall Opening Convocation on Wednesday, August 20, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chambers-McClure Academic Center (CMAC). This year’s keynote remarks will be delivered by Cheryl Bevelle-Orange, a published author, corporate executive, and co-founder of Orange & Bevelle, whose leadership and vision have inspired innovation and organizational transformation in both corporate and community spheres.
President Donald W. Comer will open the ceremony, officially declaring the College in session and welcoming a new cohort of first-year students into the Lane family. The College's tagline, The Next Level of Excellence, reflects Lane’s continued momentum in advancing its six strategic pillars: Community Engagement, Differential Advantage, Academic Excellence, Experiential Learning, Strategic Enrollment Management, and Financial Vitality.
This convocation marks the first time for Dr. Lawrence Potter, Lane’s newly appointed Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs to preside over Convocation. As the College’s chief academic officer, Dr. Potter leads the continued advancement of Lane’s academic excellence and shapes innovative programs that prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world.
The Opening Convocation is a cherished Lane tradition, signaling the start of the academic year and affirming the College’s mission to prepare graduates for leadership, service, and success. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the College gather for this ceremonial launch, which culminates with the Class of 2029 taking the Lane College Student Pledge—a symbol of their commitment to the values and traditions of the institution.
Cheryl Bevelle-Orange brings a wealth of expertise and insight to this year’s convocation. Her distinguished career as a corporate leader and entrepreneur is matched by her work as a published author, where she has shared her perspectives on leadership, resilience, and purpose. Her commitment to developing people and building organizations aligns with Lane’s mission of transforming lives through education.
“This convocation is more than a ceremony—it is a statement of who we are and where we are going,” said President Comer. “We gather to welcome the Class of 2029, to reaffirm our commitment to each of our six strategic pillars, and to signal to the world that Lane College is steadfast in its pursuit of the next level of excellence. Our students will leave here ready to lead, serve, and make a meaningful impact in every sphere they enter.”
Faculty and administrators will participate in formal academic regalia, while students are encouraged to wear business casual attire. The day will begin with the ceremonial ringing of the Victory Bell, a Lane tradition, at 10:45 a.m., followed by the Academic Processional from Bray Hall to CMAC.
The event is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader Jackson community. Seating is limited.
