At the 2025 United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Annual Gala, Lane College’s Chief of Staff to the President, Dr. Anthony T. Williams Jr., reunited with political analyst and CNN host Van Jones, marking a memorable moment in their shared connection to the historic institution. The two first met over 10 years ago when Jones served as the keynote speaker at the Illinois State University Martin Luther King Jr. dinner and Williams was a graduate student. Their recent reunion at one of the most notable fundraisers supporting historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) reignited their conversation on the enduring influence of Lane College.

Jones, a proud native of Jackson Tennessee, took the opportunity to reflect on his deep personal and familial ties to Lane College. He spoke passionately about how his lineage is deeply rooted in Lane's legacy, sharing that his mother, father, uncles, aunts, and even his grandparents all attended the college. "If it was not for black colleges, I would not be here," Jones said, emphasizing the critical role these institutions played in shaping his success. He also shared that his grandfather, Chester Arthur Kirkendoll, served as president of Lane College at the age of 34.

Both Jones and Williams expressed their profound gratitude and love for Lane College, noting the pivotal role it has played in their lives and careers. Their heartfelt reunion at the UNCF Gala was a powerful reminder of the ongoing importance of supporting HBCUs, such as Lane College, which continue to nurture the talents and futures of countless students like them.
