Lane College’s marching band, The Quiet Storm, is entering a new era defined by discipline, growth, and a renewed commitment to excellence. Under the direction of Mr. Christopher Jefferson, the band has made remarkable strides in musical quality, culture, and student development. The improvement from last season to this one is unmistakable. The sound is fuller, the execution is sharper, and the energy behind every performance reflects a powerful cultural shift.

Mr. Jefferson joined Lane College in 2021 and inherited a program in need of direction and stability. He moved quickly to rebuild the foundation, centering the band experience on three core commitments that guide every member:

A commitment to the individual
Students focus on spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional health as the base of self discipline and personal growth.

A commitment to academic success
Members uphold classroom excellence through consistent attendance, disciplined study habits, and academic accountability.

A commitment to life as a bandsman
Every musician and auxiliary member is expected to master their music, drill, rehearsal expectations, and performance standards that reflect pride and quality.

These expectations created a cultural reset for the Quiet Storm, one that students have now fully embraced. The band has grown from roughly forty musicians and a few auxiliaries to nearly seventy musicians along with twenty dancers and flags, with even more growth on the horizon.

For senior flag girl Nikiyah Malone, who has spent four years in the program, the transformation is something she sees and feels every day. She describes this season as “different in a powerful way.” The discipline is higher, the morale is stronger, and the hunger to improve is present in every rehearsal.

“People are not just showing up,” she explained. “They are showing out. The everyday effort and willingness to get better is what makes me proud to be part of this family.”

Nikiyah credits the shift to Mr. Jefferson’s leadership and the structure he has created. “He pushes us hard, but it is the kind of tough love you get from a parent,” she shared. “He wants us to grow as performers, but also as adults.”

One of the most meaningful changes for her has been the introduction of scheduled band study sessions. “That alone shows how much he cares about our success beyond the field,” she said. As a veteran member of the Color Guard, Nikiyah has naturally stepped into a leadership role among many new underclassmen, helping guide the next generation of the Quiet Storm. “We argue, we laugh, and we support each other. The morale is higher because everyone genuinely wants to be here.”

Junior cymbal player Javian Mann shares a similar story of growth and belonging. He arrived on campus late in the 2023 semester, unsure of his place and initially feeling alone and shy in his dorm. Everything changed the first time he heard the band.

“I had never heard a band that strong, loud, and proud,” Javian said. “Watching the Quiet Storm come down Lane Ave gave me an immediate sense of welcome home. It filled my heart with joy, pride, and excitement. I knew I had to be part of this program.”

Despite not knowing how to play an instrument at the time, he was welcomed without hesitation. “The Band Director and members treated me like family,” he said. “They did not care that I was new. What mattered most was my dedication, hard work, and discipline. Those are the qualities the program taught me.”

Today, Javian feels firmly rooted in a system that has given him structure, confidence, and a community that pushes him to grow every day.

The Quiet Storm’s resurgence mirrors Lane College’s institutional momentum. With rising school pride, enhanced student life, and a renewed emphasis on excellence, the band has become one of the College’s strongest ambassadors. Their performances on the field, at community events, and across the region symbolize the unity, strength, and forward movement of Lane College.

The Quiet Storm is not just improving.
It is becoming a force.
