Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act

Lane College was awarded $1,215,489 of CARES Act funding to support students whose education was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Student Eligibility

Initial Eligibility requirement as of March 27, 2020

  1. Students must be eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA). For purposes of disbursal of these funds, the College will base determination of eligibility on the existence of the student’s 2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  2. Student must be enrolled at least half time.
  3. Students must be United States citizens.
  4. Determine the amount of each individual Emergency Financial Aid Grant consistent with all applicable laws including non-discrimination laws.
  5. Prescribe the methodology for distribution of funds across the student population.
  6. Lane CARES Fund – $592 will be awarded to each student enrolled in the College in the Spring 2020 to support the student’s food, housing and transportation needs caused by the disruption.
  7. The Lane Direct Support Fund – These funds will be awarded on a case by case bases. A student may request these funds to support allowable educational expenses.

Awarded students must indicate and certify to allowable use of grant funds as defined by Section 18004(c) and this policy on the Lane College CARES Act student emergency grant certification.

The CARES Act student emergency funding will be managed by Student Accounts. As encouraged by the Secretary of Education in the Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement for CARES Act Funding, Student Accounts will exercise the use of professional judgment available under Section 479A of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), 20 U.S.C § 1087tt, to determine need and eligibility for receipt of CARES Act student emergency grants.

The College will award student emergency grants on the basis of need (established by expected family contribution (EFC)), and upon certification (by each grantee/student) of allowable use as defined by Section 18004(c) of the CARES Act and consistent with this policy. The College will allocate emergency grant awards to students across multiple tiers.

How Lane will disburse funding?

  1. Lane CARES Fund – $592 will be awarded to each student enrolled in the College in the Spring 2020 to support the student’s food, housing and transportation needs caused by the disruption.
  2. The Lane Direct Support Fund – These funds will be awarded on a case by case bases. A student may request these funds to support allowable educational expenses

On April 14, 2020, Lane College signed and submitted the Certification and Agreement Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the Coronavirus Aid Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to the Department of Education.

The total amount of funds that the college received from the Department pursuant to the college Certification and Agreement for Emergency Aid Grants to Students was $1,215,489.

Total Amount of Federal Aid Distributed to Students

As of May 15, 2020, a total of $657,574 has been distributed to students.
As of October 9, 2020, a total of $737,673.59 has been distributed to students.

Estimated number of students eligible to participate under Section 484 in TIV of the Higher Education Act of 1965

There are approximately 1,070 students at Lane College eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in TIV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under the CARES ACT.

Total number of students who have received Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under section 18004(a) (1) of the CARES Act

Approximately 1,070 student have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant under the CARES Act as of 5/15/2020.

Methods used by Lane College to determine student’s eligibility and amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grant under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act

  1. Lane College awarded to each student enrolled in the College in the Spring 2020 to support the student’s food, housing and transportation needs caused by the disruption. Average daily cost were determined.
  2. All students received an application via their Lane College email an application May 1, 2020. Students were asked to complete the application by selecting all boxes that describe their individual need in which prevented the student from achieving academic success due to the disruption caused by COVID-19. The following describes the options:

    2. Broadband Access (Wi-Fi)
    3. Computer hardware or software
    4. Food Insecurity
    5. Housing Needs
    6. Healthcare Needs
    7. Childcare Needs
    8. Course Materials
    9. Transportation

Students are required to submit documentation to support their needs. Students that are awarded are notified and funds are sent to BankMobile account. Student application as well as questions are routed to studentaccounts@lanecollege.edu.
