Jackson, Tenn. (December 8, 2023) - Lane College is pleased to celebrate Jada Cain for being awarded the $10,000 Rooted in Science Scholarship through the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Jada is a senior Biology major from Memphis, Tennessee. In November of 2022, Jada competed and was crowned Miss UNCF Lane College 2023.
"Having the financial help of UNCF scholarships eases the stress of worrying about how I am going to pay my tuition and fees this semester.", Cain said. "I have not always taken out time to complete scholarship applications. I told myself that I would never be selected, but I pushed past my self-doubt and started applying. I encourage all my fellow students to apply and keep applying. It's worth the effort. Receiving this scholarship has paid for the remaining balance for the fall semester and any extra expenses."
In addition to being an accomplished scholar in the classroom, Cain also serves in various leadership positions outside the classroom, including Miss UNCF. Cain also serves as Vice-President of the Lane College Pre-Alumni Council, Brand Ambassador for Phi Beta Lambda Business Fraternity Incorporated, and participant in the HBCU Wellness program.
"I was not surprised when I was informed Jada Cain was recognized for receiving the Rooted in Science Scholarship," De`Shawn Barnes, Director of Alumni Affairs and Pre-Alumni Council Advisor said. "During my relationship with Ms. Cain, I have experienced a person who carries an array of leadership skills, networking skills, and professional skills. She is an individual who shows up earlier than asked, works hard, and is a team player."
Cain's plan after college is to earn her Master's in Forensics Biology from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
